Matt Rees/3DCreate, Art Director and Model Maker

3D modeller and art designer Matt moved to his new workshop within Makers Yard, Frome, only days before commissioning this shoot. With a renowned reputation for bringing the extraordinary visions of others to life, this was an exciting call to receive.

THE BRIEF

Looking to create uncluttered portrait images, the almost empty, white washed simplicity of a studio, barely used, was ideal. The space, containing a single, large scale model of Wembley Stadium, seemed to symbolise both success and a new beginning.

Jamie immediately put me at ease and made it an enjoyable experience” - because my aim is always that the client should enjoy the process as well as the final result.

THE PROCESS

Matt was very apprehensive about being photographed; so I set up, as I always do, with minimum fuss. Helping someone learn to trust the camera is part of the process and key to capturing their essence so we calmly chatted about how he takes an idea from a creative thought to an intricate, laser cut architectural model or even a striking Stormzy Pyramid Stage set.

I started with shots of Matt at his desk. A ‘safe zone’ where his awareness was on his work and his passion, not on the camera. The best shots are almost always the most relaxed so I made more distance between us, even putting the camera down at times.

Out of our easy chat it emerged that Matt has a quirky side line in laser etched wooden, classic-brand biscuits! This was one of the incidental moments I was waiting for, when the corner glances and the smirks provided the vein of gold that the camera was looking for.

Our relaxed session achieved a set of natural, non-posed headshots that Matt is now confident to feature alongside his work
